Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT's app crossed 1 billion global monthly active users in June 2026 — the fastest app in history to reach that milestone, per Sensor Tower data reported by Reuters. Weekly active users have held at 900 million since OpenAI's February 2026 disclosure.

  • Anthropic just overtook OpenAI in both revenue and valuation. Claude-maker Anthropic reported $47 billion in annualized revenue in May 2026 — above OpenAI's $25 billion — and raised a $65 billion round at a $965 billion valuation, topping OpenAI's $852 billion.

  • Only ~5% of ChatGPT users pay. OpenAI still counts 50 million paying subscribers against roughly 1 billion active users, though the newly worldwide $8/month ChatGPT Go plan is aimed at closing that gap.

  • Google Gemini's app reached 900 million+ monthly active users at Google I/O in May 2026, up from 750 million just three months earlier — putting Gemini's headline user count within reach of ChatGPT's.

  • ChatGPT's referral market share fell to an all-time low of 76.85% in Statcounter's April 2026 data — but that measure only tracks outbound chatbot referrals. On raw web-visit share, a different picture emerges: ChatGPT down near 53%, Gemini up near 28%, and Claude above 9%.

  • Google AI Overviews still reaches 2 billion+ monthly users embedded in Search — plus a newly disclosed AI Mode surpassing 1 billion monthly active users worldwide.

  • 92% of Fortune 500 companies now use ChatGPT, with over 7 million enterprise workplace seats active — up 9x year over year. Claude, meanwhile, counts 70% of the Fortune 100 (including 8 of the Fortune 10) as customers.

  • Grok's real user base is much bigger than trackers assumed. SpaceX's own IPO filing disclosed ~117 million monthly active Grok users in March 2026 — more than triple the 35 million reported just three months earlier.

One month after our May 2026 ChatGPT statistics roundup, the user-growth story is mostly the same — ChatGPT keeps adding users, slowly. The bigger story is money. Anthropic's Series H in late May valued the company at $965 billion and disclosed $47 billion in annualized revenue, both ahead of OpenAI, which has since confidentially filed for a US IPO. For brands, that shift matters as much as user counts: ranking in ChatGPT is still the biggest single opportunity, but tracking visibility across a genuinely multi-polar AI market is no longer optional.

Here is a full breakdown of the numbers as of June 2026.

How many people use ChatGPT?

ChatGPT has 900 million weekly active users, a figure OpenAI first disclosed in February 2026 and has not updated since. That's more than double the 400 million reported in February 2025.

A separate, independently sourced figure now exists alongside it: Sensor Tower data reported by Reuters shows ChatGPT's app crossed 1 billion global monthly active users in June 2026 — making it the fastest app in history to reach that milestone, ahead of the early growth curves of TikTok, Instagram, and Google Maps. Weekly and monthly figures measure overlapping but different things, so the two numbers aren't directly comparable, but both point the same direction: total reach is still climbing even as ChatGPT's share of the broader AI market shrinks.

In web traffic, ChatGPT recorded 5.51 billion visits in April 2026, down slightly from 5.73 billion in March — well off the all-time peak of roughly 6.16 billion visits in October 2025.

In the United States, ChatGPT has an estimated 77.2 million monthly active users.

ChatGPT still processes over 2.5 billion queries per day across all users and surfaces. A smaller but fast-growing product line is worth noting: Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, crossed 5 million weekly users in June 2026, up from 2 million in April.

Guest users vs. registered accounts

OpenAI still allows unauthenticated access to ChatGPT — anyone can use it without an account, with more limited functionality and tighter rate limits.

OpenAI has not disclosed a precise breakdown of guest versus logged-in usage, and third-party analytics platforms still don't distinguish the two cleanly. What the data does show:

  • ChatGPT has well over 500 million registered accounts, based on disclosed user milestones through 2025.

  • Monthly web visits (5.5 billion) vastly exceed registered account counts, pointing to heavy repeat usage from logged-in users, bot traffic, and a meaningful share of unauthenticated guest use.

  • Free-tier users still represent roughly 81% of ChatGPT's active user base — the large majority remain on the free tier whether or not they have a registered account.

How many people pay for ChatGPT?

OpenAI's confirmed figure remains 50 million paying subscribers across all tiers. That spans four consumer and business plans:

  • ChatGPT Free — no cost, rate-limited access

  • ChatGPT Go — $8/month, an ad-supported tier that launched in India in August 2025 and rolled out worldwide, including the US, in mid-2026

  • ChatGPT Plus — $20/month, the original consumer tier, with roughly 10 million subscribers

  • ChatGPT Pro — $200/month, premium access; less than 1% of subscribers but growing

  • ChatGPT Team / Enterprise / Edu — per-seat pricing for organizations, now over 9 million paying business users, up from 5 million in April

OpenAI is still targeting 122 million total paying subscribers by end of 2026. Internal forecasts reported by The Information put 112 million of those on the low-cost ChatGPT Go tier alone — meaning nearly all of the projected subscriber growth is expected to come from the $8/month plan rather than Plus or Pro upgrades. If OpenAI hits the target, it implies replacing a chunk of high-value Plus revenue with a much larger volume of cheaper subscriptions.

Revenue and valuation

OpenAI's annualized revenue has held at roughly $25 billion since March 2026, on a run-rate of about $2 billion per month, with the company targeting $29.4 billion for full-year 2026. OpenAI is valued at $852 billion following a $122 billion financing round in March, and confidentially filed for a US IPO on June 8, 2026 — a listing that could value the company between $850 billion and $1 trillion and is expected as soon as Q4 2026.

That used to be the whole story. It isn't anymore.

Anthropic overtakes OpenAI in revenue and valuation

The biggest change since our May update didn't happen inside ChatGPT at all. On May 28, 2026, Anthropic closed a $65 billion Series H round at a $965 billion post-money valuation — surpassing OpenAI's $852 billion mark and making Anthropic the most valuable private company in AI. The round jumped from a $380 billion valuation in February 2026, roughly a 2.5× re-rating in three months.

Alongside the funding, Anthropic disclosed $47 billion in annualized run-rate revenue — up from roughly $10 billion for all of 2025, and now ahead of OpenAI's $25 billion. The company reports over 300,000 business customers, more than 500 customers spending over $1 million annually, and says large accounts have grown nearly 7× year over year.

The twist: Anthropic's revenue is built almost entirely on developers and enterprises using the Claude API, not a mass-market chatbot. Claude's standalone consumer user base is still a small fraction of ChatGPT's — this is a case of a much smaller consumer product generating outsized business revenue, largely through coding tools and API-embedded usage.

Enterprise adoption

Consumer user counts get the headlines, but the enterprise numbers are just as telling about where each company's revenue actually comes from.

  • 92% of Fortune 500 companies use ChatGPT, per OpenAI and Reuters. More than 7 million ChatGPT for Work seats are now active, up roughly 9x year over year.

  • 70% of the Fortune 100 use Claude, including 8 of the Fortune 10 — a striking figure given Claude's much smaller consumer footprint, and consistent with Anthropic's revenue being enterprise- and API-driven rather than consumer-driven.

  • Microsoft Copilot reports 100 million+ monthly active users across all surfaces, but independent enterprise surveys found only 20–30% of purchased seats are actually used weekly at the average company — a usage-vs-license gap that stands in contrast to standout deployments like Wipro (95%+ monthly active usage) and Infosys (91%+).

Who uses ChatGPT? Age demographics

ChatGPT still skews heavily toward younger adults. The 18–34 age bracket accounts for 52.99% of all users, essentially unchanged from the spring, and usage drops off sharply above 55.

How ChatGPT compares to the competition

ChatGPT remains the largest AI assistant by nearly every measure, but the gap to its closest rivals keeps narrowing — and on revenue and valuation, one rival has already passed it.

Google AI Overviews and Gemini

Google AI Overviews — the AI-generated summaries embedded directly in Google Search — still reaches 2 billion+ monthly users across more than 200 countries and territories. A newly disclosed figure adds to the picture: Google says AI Mode has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users worldwide, counted as part of the broader Search experience.

The standalone Gemini app reached 900 million+ monthly active users at Google I/O in May 2026 — up from 750 million just three months earlier, and more than double the 400 million reported a year prior. That puts Gemini's headline app user count within striking distance of ChatGPT's 900 million weekly figure, even though the two metrics (weekly vs. monthly) aren't perfectly comparable.

Perplexity

Perplexity's user base has been roughly flat this year at approximately 45 million monthly active users. Its valuation climbed to $22.6 billion following a January 2026 Series E-6 round, against roughly $450–500 million in annualized revenue — a 45–50x revenue multiple, down from over 100x implied at the time of its September 2025 round.

Perplexity still positions itself as an AI-first search engine rather than a general chatbot, making it a direct challenger to Google for informational, citation-heavy queries — but its share of chatbot referral traffic has been essentially flat to declining as Gemini and Claude scale faster.

Claude (Anthropic)

Claude's consumer-side monthly active users remain a small fraction of ChatGPT's — reasonable estimates put it around 26–30 million across web and mobile, with third-party figures ranging as high as the hundreds of millions depending on whether API-embedded usage is counted. Anthropic itself does not publish a consolidated consumer MAU number, focusing its disclosures on business customers and revenue instead.

What has changed is the money behind it: Anthropic's $47 billion annualized revenue and $965 billion valuation (see above) now both exceed OpenAI's. Claude's web-visit share also jumped from 3.4% in February 2026 to 9.2% in May — nearly tripling in a single quarter, a continuation of the "QuitGPT" wave that first hit in March.

Grok (xAI)

Grok's user base turns out to be considerably larger than most third-party trackers had estimated. Because xAI itself doesn't publish clean MAU figures and Grok's usage is entangled with X's own userbase, independent estimates had ranged from 50 to 64 million monthly users. A far more authoritative source settled the question: SpaceX's own IPO filing disclosed that Grok features reached approximately 117 million monthly active users in March 2026 — up from 35 million in December 2025 and roughly 60 million in January, out of 550 million total monthly active users across X and Grok combined.

Despite that bigger-than-expected base, Grok's growth on web traffic and mobile app share has clearly slowed: its global web-visit share has held at roughly 2.4–2.8% for months, and its next flagship model, Grok 5, remains unreleased. xAI is now a wholly owned subsidiary of SpaceX, which is itself heading toward a public listing valued north of $2 trillion.

DeepSeek

DeepSeek's global growth has plateaued well below its early-2025 viral peak, but it remains a major force inside China. Reuters reported 81.6 million weekly active users in China as of February 2026 — enough for second place domestically, behind ByteDance's Doubao at roughly 155 million weekly users. Globally, DeepSeek holds about 4% of AI chatbot web-visit share, making it the largest non-Western competitor in the market even as its momentum outside China has cooled.

Microsoft Copilot

Copilot's numbers vary wildly by definition. Microsoft's own reporting puts monthly active users across all Copilot surfaces (Windows, Microsoft 365, web, mobile) at 100 million+, but that figure conflates casual Windows/OS-level usage with paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats. On narrower measures — standalone web traffic and mobile app share — Copilot trails badly, at roughly 1.3–2% of chatbot web-visit share and a mobile DAU share down an estimated 60% year-to-date. The clearest signal of real enterprise usage comes from individual large deployments: Wipro (95%+ weekly usage, 7.5 million prompts a month) and Infosys (91%+) show Copilot can drive genuine engagement, but independent surveys suggest that's the exception rather than the rule across the broader enterprise base.

Market share: standalone chatbots only

Statcounter measures AI chatbot referrals to third-party websites — a proxy for active usage that excludes Google AI Overviews (which is embedded in Search and generates no outbound referral traffic).

ChatGPT's referral share fell to an all-time low of 76.85% in April 2026, dropping for a third consecutive month as the AI chatbot referral market keeps fragmenting. Gemini has held second place for two straight months since overtaking Perplexity in March, while Claude's earlier March spike — tied to the initial "QuitGPT" wave — has cooled somewhat, easing back to 2.66% after peaking higher during the surge.

Market share by web traffic tells a different story

Statcounter's referral measure only counts clicks a chatbot sends to other websites — it says nothing about how much traffic the chatbots themselves receive. Similarweb-based web-visit data, which measures direct usage of each platform, shows a much faster shift away from ChatGPT, and includes competitors Statcounter's chatbot-referral view doesn't isolate:

Over the fifteen months to May 2026, ChatGPT's worldwide web-visit share fell from 76.5% to 53.9%, while Gemini's rose from 5.6% to 27.9% and Claude's from 1.4% to 9.2%. Claude's US share alone rose more than a full point in a single month. The two methodologies (Statcounter's referral share vs. this web-visit share) disagree sharply on how fast ChatGPT is losing ground — but the web-visit data lines up much more closely with the revenue and valuation shift toward Anthropic and Google described above.

Mobile app share: the sharpest divergence yet

The competitive shakeup shows up most clearly on US mobile, where Apptopia's daily-active-user share data tracks month over month:

On this measure, Claude's rise is the standout story of 2026 — from 4% to roughly 13% of US mobile DAU share in two months, overtaking Grok for third place. ChatGPT keeps losing daily-engagement share even as its total (weekly/monthly) user counts keep growing, a sign that new users are joining but existing users are splitting their attention across more apps than before.

Market share: including Google AI Overviews

Both market-share views above exclude the largest AI surface on the internet. When you include Google AI Overviews — serving AI-generated answers to 2 billion+ monthly users inside Google Search — the competitive landscape looks different again.

The same caveat applies as before: these figures aren't apples-to-apples. An AI Overviews "user" ran a Google search that happened to surface an AI summary; a ChatGPT user deliberately opened an app and typed a message. Intent and depth of engagement differ significantly between the two.

Still, the reach numbers make one thing clear: Google remains the dominant force in AI-assisted answers by sheer scale, even as Anthropic — with a fraction of the consumer users — has become the more valuable and higher-revenue AI company.
